Last Blog

I am glad to have all of you as classmates and it was really fun. I also hope that I will have some of you next semester. Good luck everyone :)

-Cheery

Farewell Fellow EN100 classmates

I wish you all the best in your college years. It'll be cool to have any of you as classmates in other classes for next semester. Until then, I hope you all enjoy your Christmas break. Take care and see you guys later!

-Paul

Farewell to all

Dear classmates,
I am very pleased to have all of you in my class! I had a great semester and the snack party turned out really great for last minute planning. I wish everyone luck in whatever you wish to pursue. Take care!

*God Speed*

To all of my EN100 classmates and most especially Dr. Rivera,
Although our acquaintance may have been brief I got the opportunity to experience my first English class in college with all of you. Although we may not have shared a close bond but we did share a common bond, and that was the drive to make it in life and to educate our selves in a much higher level. My favorite memory would be the last two days of class where we got to share our heartfelt words with each other through poetry. To think that the day that I understood a lot about each and everyone of you would be the last to days is a sad yet grateful feeling. I hope that you all continue along the path that you are currently traveling and that your roads only get smoother. Yet if you experience bumps and dips in your road, may you have the strength to rise above it and continue. Take care!

For 12/7

The party was great. I enjoyed watching the extra credit videos and listening to the people who had to say their poems. Also, the food was awesome. I'm sorry that I forgot to mention paper products, but with or without it, it's truthfully been a wonderful class.

Thursday, December 8, 2011

Yesterday in EN100, we had a little snack party. There were lots of chips, dip, noodles, cupcakes and juice. The snacks were great. While we ate our snacks, some of the students had poems and extra credit projects to present. A lot of them were really good. It was a shame not everyone was there. Well, anyways, this is not my farewell post. I will be posting that on Monday.

Farewell

Well unfortuantely yesterday was the last day of class. I enjoyed hearing everyone's presentations and poems. The snack party was nice. I hope we all learned a lot from this semester, and I hope I passed! Well goood luck everyone and take care
To my fellow classmates,
I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of you for your participation, sharing your experiences and thoughts during our class exercises, moodle-online and blog. I really enjoyed the exchange of opinions, points of view and conversations.
While this completes our semester, definitely does not mean our final days, but a continuation of our beginnings - a path to great adventures ahead.
CONGRATULATIONS! To each and everyone of you for completing this semester. You are all already achievers.
"There is no challenge in this world that will wither us. There is only challenge that will rise us to the occasion. Believe! Be Strong! And make your mark!"
Your Classmate - Marge :)
So today was the last day of class. It has been a good semester. We listened to the people who had to present their poems and extra credit. Happy holidays everyone!

December 7, 2011

Today was a fun day. I was the first to present the multimedia extra credit. Next people presented their special project. During the presentation we had our little potluck. The food was really good.

December 07, 2011

Today we had our presentations of the special projects and extra credit. The poems that were presented were really good and nice. We also had our class potluck and the food was good even though it was mostly chips. I hope we all still had a lot of fun.
Also thank you to Francis for letting some people use his laptop to present our projects.
Have a nice weekend everyone.

December 7, 2011

Today was a good day! We had our snack party and listened to everyones poems and extra credit projects. They were all great to hear. Everybody did a great job. It was our last time to see each other today, and not our whole class was there, but it was okay!

3:28pm

I just visited the poets club blog site and there were nice poems posted up. Its enjoyable reading other art works made by others. Also knowing that you can relate to how they feel as they write there own poem. The works were calming.

12/6

Yesterday, we presented our poems to the class. I was the last one to present and I felt really nervous. I'm quite fond of poetry slams, so I guess that's how I presented my poems. Don't forget that the party is tomorrow guys!

poems

I was hoping to present my poems, but the list was full. Maybe I will get the opportunity to present it on Wednesday.
Hello everyone! The last time we met for EN100, the final exam took place. Some people chose to do special projects and several brave ones settled for the exam of 16 chapters. That is serious. Only 5 of us were able to present our poems. The rest will present at our next meeting. See you all Wednesday.

Monday, December 5, 2011

December 5, 2011

In the beginning of class, five people presented their poems to the class. I enjoyed listening to all of them, especially those with life lessons. I will able to implement them to my life. When the five presenters were done, everyone else turned in their projects and that was it for today's class.

I hope those that took the exam did well! One more session and our English class will officially be over. Don't forget to bring snacks for our party this Wednesday!

Finals - Special Project

In today's class, I had the privilege of reading three of my poems to the class. These poems were as a result of a special project for the finals. I chose to write 5 inspirational poems that included an inspirational message. The poems that I read were about Road Ahead - Encouragement; Live Life in Colors - Live Life; and Sweet Butterfly - Resilience. I hope the class enjoyed the poems as much as I enjoyed hearing the others.

Potluck Wednesday

Hey guys!
I don't really know if the email I sent to all of you was succesful so I'm posting it here.
For the Potluck Wednesday, can you email me at this email lemon12_09@hotmail.com about what you are going to bring.
Thank you. :)

December 5, 2011

Today's class went by really fast and we had the special projects to turn in. As for those people who chose to take the written final exam they had to take it within 45 minutes. Presentations will be next class and also the class potluck!

December 5, 2011

We turned in our special projects and some presented theirs. All of them were really good. I enjoyed listening to them. The semester is almost over =)) See everybody next class.

Oh yeah, are we still having a potluck or something? Please let me know!

Final Exams and Special Projects!

Today was the day when we had to either do our final exam or present our special project. There were some really great poems and all of them were very good. Only 5 people could present to allow enough time for those taking the final written exam. The rest will present in the next class session.

11/30/11

Last day in Moodle!! :) So on our last moodle session, we got to go over chapter 17 which is the handbook. All of those listed in the handbook are very important and resourceful. They can be used to write effective and efficient essays.

11/28/11

On Monday, we went over chapter 16, which was on writing a research paper. The chapter had some pretty interesting and useful information. It tells about the MLA and showed the ways to cite our work. It is a resourceful chapter.

Thursday, December 1, 2011

Last Online Class

Yesterday was our last online class in our Moodle room. We had to discuss about the Handbook and what we find very resourceful in the information provided. Next class meeting will be held on our Homebase.
Have a great weekend everyone.
Yesterday in EN100 was our last day online. We had discussed the very last chapter of our book. Ch.17, Handbook , was filled with useful information that we would always go back to. Have a great weekend everyone. See you Monday!

Last Moodle session!

Well today class was held once again online, for the final moodle session. So I had read the last chapter on the Handbook Writing Effective Sentences and its also like a brief conclusion on what the handbook has covered. We covered so much this semester! I hope we all keep this in thought and use it as it is a very helpful resource. Enjoy the weekend guys!

Last Day on Moodle..

I'm actually going to miss our Moodle days. Having the freedom to go online when I can is a very blessed privilege. I guess it'll be just class time for all of us! I can't wait for our party, Im really looking forward to it. See you all next week!

Writing Effective Sentences part2

Effective sentences need to be concise, fluent, emphatic. To write good sentences takes careful study and good, regular practice. You can study the guides in such textbooks as Writing for College and Technical English in the CAT electronic library or on-line books such as Elements of Style. This section will provide some guides that can help you avoid the most common problems candidates have in writing sentences. The list is basic and selective.
It is expected that you can write Standard American English. If you need to review rules about grammar, punctuation, spelling, or sentence structure, you are asked to consult a college composition handbook. In fact, it is recommended that all candidates have a composition handbook on their desks for reference at all times.
Following are some guidelines for writing effective sentences.

Effective Sentences

Effective Sentences : A correct sentence may not express the idea it intends to express very clearly or forcefully. Correctness alone cannot make a good sentence. It has to be effective at the same time. Effective sentences have some or all of the following qualities: unity, coherence, brevity, emphasis, and variety.

Handbook

Chapter 17 speaks to Handbook: Writing Effective Sentences. This includes parts of speech, kinds of sentence, combining sentence, avoiding wordy phrases, so forth and so on. This chapter will definitely enhance and improve my writing skills and speaking skills.

Wednesday

So today, was our LAST online session! I cant believe we're nearly done with the semester! Anyway, we had to discuss in our own opinion which area in the handbook we thought was most resourceful. According to majority of my classmates, all the areas were important to us. And I agree because every technique counts and makes an essay well constructed. And everything taught in the handbook can really help us in writing papers especially now that we're in college.

By the way..I had to makeup both tests 3 & 4 this evening and I must say, they were quite difficult. I really hope I at least did okay and that I pass this semester with a satisfying grade.

Yay, I cant wait til Christmas break! I'll see everyone on Monday and good luck on your "special projects!"

Last Moodle Session

It's been really great. I feel like I'm going to miss going online for class. It really has been quite the experience. For our last Moodle session, we discussed about the handbook, which contained a lot of useful information.

November 30, 2011

Today is our last moodle session=(((
We went over Chapter 17: Handbook- Writing Effective Sentences. We had to discuss which areas of the Handbook we felt were most resourceful. Just like everybody else, I thought that all of them were resourceful. They were all helpful to me. It is a great guide to use when writing a paper.

I'll see you all on Monday! Have a great weekend and don't forget about our extra credit and good luck on the special project/final exam.

LAST MOODLE SESSION

Today is our last day for online moodle sessions! For today's discussion, we have to discuss the areas of the Handbook that we found to be most resourceful. It was a great experience having class online and it gave us a taste of the college life. I will miss our moodle room and all the discussions we have participated in as a class. I feel as though I have become a more educated student because of this experience.

See you all next week and goodbye moodle!

Tuesday, November 29, 2011

last day

So, today we had an online session. We had a discussion on which of the areas in the handbook are helpful. I thought that all areas are helpful. I can not choose just one. I am sad that this is our last moodle room session. I hope that everyone is having a good day.

Wednesday Class

Today our class was held online in moodle. We discussed about chapter 17 which is Handbook. It basically shows different areas that can be used to write an effective sentence. I found that all of the areas are resourceful. Have a great weekend everyone!

Monday

We went over chapter 15 and 16 and this were the last chapter we discussed about in class. On chapter 16 we discussed about how to write a research paper. There are ten steps to write a reasearch paper. The chapters were simple and udnerstanding.
On Monday, we went over Chapters 15 and 16. Those were our last chapters. We are finally done! We went over on how to cite properly and the 10 steps to write a research paper. Then, we did some exercises. We also talked about our 5 points extra credit and went to the computer lab to do our teacher evaluation.

See you all on Monday! Good luck to all of us on the final exam/special project!!!!

Blog

On Monday, we went over the chapter 15. We did some exercises that made us understand the topic more. I'm glad that we made it this far guys. I hope we will all do good on the final exam or projects.

Monday

I was absent but from reading everyone else's blogs, we briefly went through chapters 15 & 16 and learned the MLA format along with properly citing and writing a research paper. Afterward, there was a 5 point extra credit opportunity that was given out but I am not quite sure what it was. I hate it when I miss important notices in class. Anyway, I'll see everyone on Monday since our next class is online. I can't believe we're practically done with the semester. Keep up the good work everyone!

Monday, November 28, 2011

Monday

On Monday's class we discussed chapters 15 & 16. We also went over how to properly cite our work. In class we discussed the MLA writing format and talked about the special project. We'll see you all online in our moodle room!

Monday

Today in class, we discussed about Chapter 15 and Chapter 16. In Chapter 16, it talked about Writing Research Paper and we should also remember the 10 Steps to help us through writing the paper. We are also given an extra credit opportunity which is worth 5 points.
Next class will be held in our Moodle Room.

Chapters 15 & 16

Our class did an exercise on Chapter 15, which covered responding to questions under critical thinking on a story called "My Life to Live-Or Not". This was not an easy argument as ones life is a life that should be lived. Evidently, the State of Oregon had passed legislation favoring physician-assisted termination. No doubt that this was extensively debated during sessions where religion, specialty groups, organizations who were for or against had a lot to express about this issue prior to its enactment. I'm almost certain as well that there are specific conditions in order to be a candidate for this very controversial issue prior to termination. Not easy at all. In Chapter 16, our class learned about the 10 steps to writing a research paper and the proper application of MLA Style and Works Cited.
The end is near for this semester. Congratulations to all of us!

11/28

Today, we learned mostly about writing a research paper. I'm glad that we went over this. I really forgot how to cite sources and I found it awesome to re-learn it again. Now I must concentrate on the special project and the extra credit.

Monday November 28, 2011

It's English class once again! For today's session we've completed Chapter 15 Argument: Writing to Persuade with Exercise 13. It required us to identify the different parts of an argument essay. Afterwards, we started on Chapter 16 which was Writing the Research Paper. There are ten steps to writing a research paper and all are mentioned in the text. We skimmed through the chapter fairly quickly and diligently before heading off to the computer lab to do our teacher evaluation.

See you in the moodle room this Wednesday!

Sunday, November 27, 2011

11/23/11

On Wednesday, we had our class online. We discussed what an argument is and wrote what are some examples of argument. It is persuasion on a topic which people reasonably disagree. It involves controversy.

11/ 21/11

On Monday, we went over chapter 14, which is on Definitions. We read a short story, Graffiti, and did exercises afterwards. This was a helpful way for us to understand the chapter.

Wednesday class!

Happy Thanksgiving classmates and Professor Rivera! Lets take a moment in our schedule today to pray and give thanks for everything that we've received. Enjoy Thanksgiving with your families and God bless!

11/23

We had our class online. We went over Chapter 15, which was the argument again. I was surprised because I felt like we did that during the last session. Anyways, I wish all of you a Happy Thanksgiving!

November 23, 2011

Wednesday class was held online and we have to discuss about Argument in our moodle room. we experienced arguments everyday in our life. Sometimes its really worse but sometimes its kinda pointless. Also we have a long weekend because of Thanksgiving Holiday.
Happy Thanksgiving Everyone and Have a great weekend.

Argument

Todays class was online in our class moodle room. We were assigned on Chapter 15 which was to discuss what argument is and to give some examples of this type of writing. I'm pretty sure everyone experiences many arguments in their daily lives. Argument is persuasion on a topic about which reasonable people disagree. As simple as that.

HAPPY THANKSGIVING EVERYONE!
Hello Everyone! En100 was held online today. We discussed Ch. 15, Argument: Writing to persuade. I thought we already went over that chapter, but I may be wrong. Have a Happy Thanksgiving everyone! See you on Monday.

Almost Thanksgiving!

Today wasn't a very productive day for me. With the excitement of Thanksgiving, I found myself prepping food to boredom. After sleeping it off, I did my Moodle about arguments. I found some examples to be every good, such as the one about gay marriage. Well, I hope everyone enjoys Thanksgiving!

Moodle Wednesday 11/23

The day before Thanksgiving is when we have our scheduled online session! For today's lesson, we have to discuss what an argument is and give examples using this type of writing. I found this lesson very simple as I am sure we have argued on different topics many times in our lives.

We have one more moodle session to go before we are done with the semester. Everyone keep up the good work!

Moodle Online

Moodle Online Alert...this evening we moodle. There are actually great and interesting topics to contraversial arguments. Be safe and enjoy your Thanksgiving!

Happy Thanksgiving Guys!

Today class is being held online and we had to discuss argument writing to persuade. This topic was interesting to me since I enjoy arguing and debating with others. Well during this break I will be working on finishing up my projects and hope to enjoy this weekend. Hope you all have a great thanksgiving and gain twenty pounds from all the good food this weekend! See you guys next week.

November 23, 2011

Today our class was held on moodle! Our online sessions are coming to an end soon ;(((
Well anyway we had to go over Chapter 15: Argument- Writing to Persuade. We had to discuss what and argument is and give some examples of it. It was pretty easy. Hope you all get a chance to post before midnight!

Happy Thanksgiving! Have a great weekend!

Tuesday, November 22, 2011

Our last meeting in EN100, we went over Ch. 14, Definitions. We all practiced exercise 11 and 12. Writing definitions and/or finding them is not that difficult. We also went over the other projects we could do to make up for our final exam. I chose to make an anthology with 10 poems/short stories. See you all on moodle later.

November 21, 2011

Our Monday class, we discussed our options for the final exam. We had to choose when before the end of the class or email it to Dr. Rivera before midnight if we were still undecided. We also went over "Graffiti: Taking A Closer Look" by Christopher Grant. It was interesting and very educational.

Class Session

Class yesterday we had performed an exercise on Chapter 14 - Definition: Clarifying Terms. We were able to review very closely was about "graffiti". The write-up was clear, concise and well organized. It was also very informative and easy to read. Definition was provided and terms were clarified.

11/21

Yesterday, we got back our tests and as I predicted, I did not do so well. We learned about definitions from Chapter 14. Also, we stated what we are doing for the special project. I really hope to do well on that assignment.

Monday, November 21, 2011

I'm BACK

I'm finally back in school!
Today I had to makeup test #2, which was based on chapters 5 and 6. I remembered most of the material and the questions were basically self-explanatory. Hopefully I did good! Before class ended, Dr. Rivera gave back the previous tests and she went over grades with everyone who wanted to know theirs.
Dont forget next class is online, so I'll see everyone back on Monday! :) Have a great weekend!

Grades on the Edge?

Today, we went over chapter 14. After having a group reading, we talked about the activities we'll have for the last day of our semester together and our final test. Before class ended, I checked my grades and found out that I'm 2 points away from failing! I've never been this scared in my life.

November 21, 2011

In the beginning of class, Professor Rivera handed out our test #4. I am pleased with my grade and I hope everyone had a positive result as well. For today's lesson, we covered Chapter 14 which was about definitions. We did Exercise 11 to further knowledge us about definitions. I found the lesson very informative and I had a better understanding on ways to define different words.

Our next class session will be on moodle room. See you all there!

Sunday, November 20, 2011

11/21/11

Definition / Argument

The assignment for the two chapters were on moodle online. These covered 'definition' and 'argument'. There are two parts to the definition - simple and extended. Argument is basically persuading, influencing the audience. Some instances can be controversial.

11/17

I learned about arguments and definitions. I truly didn't know that there were techniques to creating definitions. Arguments, too, surprised me with the information it contained. I wish you all a good weekend.

Wednesday, November 16, 2011

Hey everyone! Wednesday our class was held online. We had to go over Chapters 14 & 15. I thought it was very informative.

Have a great weekend everyone!

11/16/11

Todays chapters were on definition and argument. There are several techniques for writing simple definitions such as basic dictionary meaning, synonyms, direct explanation, indirect explanation and analytical or formal definition. I though chapter 14 was fairly easy to understand. To have an argument, you must have evidence. The four kinds of evidence that can be used are facts, examples, statistics, and authorities.

Moodle Wednesday!

So today on the moodle room we had two assignments. Both chapters provided good information. One was chapter 14, which was on definitions. The other was on chapter 15 which is argument.

wednesday

Today our class was held online. We discussed chapter 14 and 15. Chapter 14 is basically about definitions and what is included in a definition. In chapter 15, It discussed about Arguments and persuasion. Have a good weekend everyone!

Test # 4

On Monday, we had our test number 4. I was happy that it was not like test number 3 where we had to read so many stories. It was okay, but I don't think I'll get an A. Hope everyone did great!

"Testing Anxiety"

Hafa Adai,
The Test was on chapters 9 through 11. How convenient, it so happens to be the date that changed the lives of Americans. I thought I knew the things I studied were going to be easy on the test, but really turned out I didn't know most of the test. The test was pretty tough, and I kept on second guessing my answers.

Crazy Wednesday!

Had a very busy Wednesday. Right after school I went straight to work only to be bombarded with orders. Apparently, there was a very important function going on and it required maximum attention. In short, I'm bushed and hopefully I can still do my Moodle assignments. I haven't started yet, but I will after this blog!

Nov. 16

Today, our class was held online in our EN100 moodle room.
There, we had to do two assignments. The first was to read Chapter 15 and discuss what an argument consisted of and to give some examples. The other was Chapter 14 which talked about Definitions. We had to discuss is and also discuss the techniques of simple and extended definitions.

Have a great weekend everyone!
Hello everyone! Today en100 met on moodle. We discussed Ch.14 and 15. Definition and Argument. I've learned how to develop an argument in writing and how to use and write simple and extended definitions. Have a great weekend everyone! See you on Monday.

Everyone have a great and safe weekend. See you all next week!

moodle

Today, we had our moodle room session. We had to write about arugment. This topic was easy if you actually read the book. It can really relate to our daily lives.

MOODLE MONDAY!

So today on Moodle Monday we had to share our input on the Argument: Writing to Persuade lesson. I feel that this is a skill I practice almost everyday. I enjoy debating and I do a lot of it in my PS202 class, so I do a lot of writing that may be used to persuade others. When preparing for a debate we have to write opening and closing statements as well as rebuttals and when I prepare I have to insure that the information I put out there supports my side of the argument. I believe that I am getting better at this skill and learned so many techniques to improve.So...anyone want to debate me??? :)
Monday, we took our test #4 on Chapters 9-11. I didn't prepare too well for it, so I'm not sure how I did. I'm not expecting an A on it, but I did try my best. Hopefully my score isn't that bad. I like how we have a choice on what to do for the final exam.

oh no!

Hey guys! Hope all did well on the test yesterday! I wish I had my ride inorder to take my test, but my right was stuck in traffic. Although I am able to take my test on Monday I apologize if you guys do not get to see what your results are because of me. Other than at I now know to be there earlier or have a back up ride. Hope all passed! See you guys Monday!

Monday, November 14, 2011

Hello Everyone! Today in EN100, Test#4 was taken. It was a little difficult for me, as usual. Dr. Rivera informed us that there is another alternative to taking the final exam. I'd prefer to write a few poems or a 20 page skit, over the final exam that consists of 16 different chapters. That is scary. So, anyways good luck to anyone that will be taking the test soon. Meet you all on moodle Wednesday.

Test 4

Class took the test today. I can admittedly say this test was quite a challenge. The test was about analysis by division, process analysis, and cause & effect - Chapters 9, 10, 11. On another note, there is a new twist for the finals. Class has the option of either taking the test finals; or a do the special project - write a poem, a play or a short story. The Professor will send via email the details on the special project. It appears that I may be leaning towards the special project. Should be a lot of fun.

Monday

So today we took our last test in class. I'm dissapointed with all my other test scores! Hopefully this one I did good. Well other than that I am most definitely doing the special project to boost my grade up! Hope you all did good on the test and start deciding wheather to do the exam or the special project. Good Luck !

Test #4

Today, I truthfully feel like I did not do so well on the test. It was really confusing to me. I hope that we'll have another extra credit to help me out because I can tell my grade will drop. I'll be sure to study hard for the next one.

November 14

So today was test #4 day...I didnt go to class but I know I have to makeup this test next time we meet. I hope I do well because I am behind in so many things ): I hope everybody else did well and are satisfied with their grades! Dont forget, Wednesday is an online class for us. Have a good weekend!

test

So, today we took our chapters 9 - 11 test. I thought the level of difficulty was medium. I hope that I did good in that test. I can say that i studied for it. I'm really hoping to pass the test.

Sunday, November 13, 2011

monday class

Today we had our test #4 in class. The test was based on chapter 9 to 11. It was a little difficult but i hope i did well. Have a good day everyone! See you online!

Test #4 November 14, 2011

Today we had our Test #4. I found it quite easy, however, I did get confused on some questions. I hope everyone had a good experience with this test. This is also our last test before the final exam! For those of you who are doing the special project, be creative and have fun. And for those that will be taking the final exam, study well!

Enjoy the rest of the day and see you all on moodle.

Test and Grades?

The test was harder then before. I actually go stuck on the fill in the blank part. After the test, I went online to check my Moodle account to check my grades. I was actually surprised to is what I got because it looked lower then it should. After calculating it manually, I found out that I was missing one letter grade. I'm not sure why it's like that, but I would want to ask Dr. Rivera about it.

November 14, 2011

today, we had our Test #4 and it was about Chapters 9-11. We were also given an opportunity whether if we want to do a special project for our Final exam or do the regular exam. For me, I think I would choose to take the Final exam test rather than doing the special project because I am not really good at writing poems and such.

"Classifying"

Hafa Adai,
The chapter we went over was Chapter 12 Classification and Establishing Groups. In order to classify correctly, we should follow this procedure:
1. Select a plural subject.
2. Decide on a principle for grouping the units of your subject.
3. Establish the groups, or classes.
4. Write about the classes.
We had some interesting exercises.

So, today is a holiday. I went over chapters 9 - 11. I want to study before the test. I hope that I do well in this test.

Writing Process Worksheet

The writing process worksheet of Thung Tran was well written. She used listing as her form of writing process to develop her outline. I think she did well with her worksheet which led to her great write-up.

Thursday, November 10, 2011

Wednesday, our class was held in our moodleroom. We had to read Chapter 13 and discuss the importance of compare and contrast. We also had to discuss about what we thought about Thung Chan's writing worksheet and his essay. I enjoy this chapter, I think it was easy. We use compare and contrast a lot.

wednesday class

Today class was held online in moodle. We went over chapter chapter 13. This chapter is about comparing and contrasting things. We also had to read Thung Chan's writing process worksheet and tell what we think about his work and tell if we use the same process or not. His worksheet was well written and organized.

Online Class!

Today we had to go on Moodle. I had a pretty stressful day so having an online class was pretty convenient. We had to discus about comparison and contrast and also share our thoughts about an essay. I hope everyone remembered to go on Moodle! See you all soon!

Moodle 11/9

We learned about Chapter 13 today. Comparing and contrasting should be quite the refresher for everyone. I know that it was helpful to learn about the 4 Ps and recap on what comparing and contrasting is. On another note, I wish everyone good luck on the test next week!

November 9

Today was an online class session and all we had to do was discuss what the comparison and contrast method is and to discuss the writing process worksheet provided by Thung Tran. Comparing and contrasting different things are actually really easy to do. I'm sure we'll get to go over it again in class together which would really help us more.

See everyone back on Monday. Have a safe weekend :)

Moodle Wednesday!

So our class today was online. We discussed about comparison and contrast. It was an easy topic. I hope everybody will be able to do theirs on time!

Monday nov. 07

On Monday, we went over chapter 12, which is about classification. We did some exercises about classification and how to tell if it is overlapping or not. They were easy, but I'm still confused about the different classification. I hope that I can study to make it clear to myself.

Comparison and Contrast

Showing similarities and differences is what this chapter speaks to. There is also the 4Ps method, such as purpose, points, pattern and presentation. We were also task to provide comments on Thung Tran's writing process worksheet which was nicely done. Thung used the 'Listing' method to bring her essay together. The key points found in her listing

oct. 31

Sorry guys that this is so late. On this day, we had our class online and we had to list down the difference between cause and effect and give some examples. Cause is the reason something happened and effect is the result of the action. We experience this daily so everyone should be able to understand it.

Monday class

Sorry to blog really late. On monday we went over chapter 12. This chapter is about Classification on Establishing Groups. We discussed on how to use a subject without overlapping. We also did exercise one in class which was about overlapping and exercise two that is about classifying.

Online Class

Today, our class was held on our Moodle room. We have to discuss about comparison and contrast. We are also asked to give examples. I think that having a topic that really interest us is really a good idea.
Next class we are going to take our Test #4 and it deals with Chapters 9, 10, and 11. Goodluck to us and Have a great weekend.

Hi Guys!

So today's class is held online, I went over the book and did some exercises. Figured out compare and contrast. I also went over the writing process work sheet and got to see how Tran used it on his story. Well I hope You guys did the assignments too, and see you all next week!

blogg

So today, we had online session today. We went of chapter 13. It was about camparision and contrast. It was a really good lesson if you ask me. I learned alot.

Moodle Wednesday

Today is once again our scheduled online class in moodleroom. For today's lesson, we have to discuss what comparison and contrast is and provide examples of this writing method. We also have a second discussion where we have to discuss our thoughts on the Writing Process Worksheet completed by Thung Tran. Explain if you would or wouldn't use the same techniques he has done and why.

See you all next week and study for our upcoming test!

Today in EN100, we met online. We were told to discuss comparison and contrast. Comparison and contrast is a method of showing similarities and differences between subjects. We were also told to give an example of the method. I compared and contrasted Beethoven and Mozart. Another part of the moodle assignment was to discuss what we thought about how Thung Tran used the writing process worksheet to write his essay.

Classification - Establishing Groups

Chapter 12 speaks to writing classifications, basically putting persons, places, things or ideas into groups or classes based on their characteristics. There are four basic guidelines to achieve classification writing: select a plural subject; decide on a principle for grouping the units of your subject; establish the groups or classes and write about it. In order to get a sense of feel to writing classifications, the class performed some exercises and shared their information. This helped with how the format and breakdown entailed.

Monday, November 7, 2011

Yesterday, in EN100, we received our test#1 papers. We then started Ch.12 Classification: Establishing Groups. When you classify things, you are putting persons, places, or things into groups or classes based on their characteristics. We did several classification exercises. The lesson was quite easy. See you all on moodle Wednesday!
Hey everyone!

I couldn't make it to class yesterday, but i was able to go over Chapter 12: Classification- Establishing Groups. I learned that if you want to explain by classification, you have to put persons, places, things, or ideas into groups or classes based on their characteristics. Classification deals with more than one unit, so that the subject is plural. I found it very understanding. I also read that you all saw your grade for Test#3, I was not surprised at my score! That test was pretty tough! I'm glad I did the extra credit!

11/7

Today we went back to our old classroom. We learned about classification. This is when you organize things into perspective groups of your choosing. This really helps out when needing to organizing the content of things.

11/07/11

Today was the first time I have been in room EC101 instead of the computer lab upstairs. We discussed chapter 12, which is about classification and did three exercises. On saturday, I volunteered for the Language Arts Conference. I had a great time listening to the speeches and eating good food. Even if it was a challenge for me to wake up at 6 o'clock in the morning to get ready, I am glad I went, had fun and got extra credit.

November 7, 2011

Today, in class we read about Chapter 12 which is about the classifications. We also dd the exercises which was a lot of fun.
Dr. Rivera also showed us our grade for the Test #3 and I did not do well on this one and I am glad that I took the Extra Credit which I think will help me. And I should really study more on the next exam.

Classification November 7

For today's class session we have started on Chapter 12: Classification. Classification is basically explaining the characteristics of groups, persons, places, things or ideas. When classifying, you must have a principle, which is the controlling idea. Arrange your classification in terms of classes, which relates to that of your subject. We did Exercise 1 which allowed us to identify classes that overlap, or have no relation to the principle. We also did Exercise 2 where we had to classify items commonly seen in a yard sale into groups.

I found today's class very informative and I had a better understanding of classification. See you all in moodleroom on Wednesday!

November 7

Hey guys,
So, Dr. Rivera suggested I put up a picture of my new baby boy. Because of this little guy, I've still been out of class! And what a blessing, the both of us have the same birthday! But thankfully, I should be back next week!

ANYWAY, I know today you all went through Chapter 12. Unfortunately, I had to read through it on my own and this chapter teaches about "Classification." Classification is basically putting persons, places, things, or ideas int groups or classes based on their characteristics.
I also see from earlier blog posts that you all got your test results back from test #3. I have to makeup that test as well. Hopefully it wasn't hard at all. How did everyone do? Dont forget, class on Wednesday is an online session, Therefore, I'll see everyone back next week! Have a safe weekend!

blogging

Hello fellow classmates. So today, we read chapter 12. We learned classification. We also got our test results back. I didnt do so well, but I guess thats my fault. I should study more.

Wednesday

So, I just came back from Bangkok and i thought that there was school today. Lucky my friends told me there wasnt. I'm pretty excited to know my grade for the test. I don't think i did well on it. It was a pretty hard test if u ask me.

November 2

NO CLASS TODAY!!!!
As we all know, today was a Holiday. All Souls Day.
I sure hope everyone had a blessed day...See everyone next week!

Tuesday, November 1, 2011

All Souls Day

Today is All Souls Day therefore we don't have classes. May all your loved ones that have passed on rest in peace.

See you all on Monday.

Cause & Effect

Chapter 11 speaks to the cause and effect that deals with reason and result. Applying this method is one other form to allow the reader to better understand the passage as it elaborates in asking the question - Why? and What now? There will be more details displayed in using 'cause' and 'effect' and I think its great. I was also able to read the essay written by Richard Blaylock and it was very motivating and uplifting. I was quite inspired. His writing process worksheet was also well written that led him to produce such an easy flowing essay. I would definitely use his worksheet as a guide and reference piece.

Online Class

Today, our class was held on our moodle room. We are to discuss about what deals with a Cause and Effect essay and say our thoughts about the worksheet by Richard Blaylock. If we fail to post on the moodle room and on our class blog we are considered absent. So, don't forget everyone! And also Happy Halloween. :)

Happy Halloween! 10/31/2011

I just finished the online moodle session. It may be late but I finished it before it hit 12o'clock midnight. I hope that everyone has done it. Enjoy your halloween and be safe...

HAPPY HALLOWEEN!!

Happy Halloween!

I hope all of you had a great and safe Halloween out there. Today we had a moodle session about cause and effect. It was a little long, but I was able to get it done. I hope you guys have enjoy your holiday on Wednesday!
Happy Halloween everyone! Today en100 was online. Chapter 11 was fairly long don't you think. On moodle, we discussed cause and effect. We also discussed about how Richard used cause and effect in the writing process worksheet and how it worked out for his essay. You can read our discussion at moodle. Anyways, hope everyone had a safe Halloween. Enjoy your candies.

Halloween!

I actually almost forgot about blogging and going into the Moodle room. With all the talk of Halloween, I got carried away with thoughts of free candy. After a long day of fun activities, I finally remembered to do all my work right before I went to bed. I hope everyone had a fun and safe night. Happy Halloween everybody and see you all Wednesday!

October 31, 2011

Happy Halloween everyone! So today we had an online class in moodle. We basically went over chapter 11. This chapter is about causes and effects. We also discussed our thoughts about Richard Blaylock's writing process. His process of writing on cause and effect was well organized and understandable.

october 26!

Im sorry that i blogged really late. On last week wednesday class, we were taking a test. To me the test was a little difficult. I couldn't asnwer some of the questions. To be honest I'm really nervous to know my grade. It was hard but hope I did well. Have a good evening everyone!

Halloween on Moodle Room!

BOO! Happy Halloween everybody! Although it's Halloween, we still have to do our parts as students and attend our online class. For today's lesson, we have to discuss what causes and effects deal with, as well provide examples for this type of writing. We also have to review the Writing Process Worksheet that Richard Blaylock has completed and decide if we are comfortable using the process he displayed.

Have a spooky Halloween and see you all next week!

HAPPY HALLOWEEEZY!

Today we have our online session once again, I went through the examples of cause and effect. I also read Blaylocks writing process and was able to see how cause and effect is demonstrated in an essay. Well happy halloween guys, go on and scare everyone with your beauties! See you all next week monday!

Sunday, October 30, 2011

FINALLY...HALLOWEEN!!!

Happy Halloween to everyone & I wish for you all a happy trick or treating.
Today we had to review Blaylock's worksheet where he demonstrated his way of using the cause and effect method. This method proves to be very effective when needing to demonstrate the situation and what happened after it came into effect.

Happy Halloween Everybody

Today our class was online in our moodleroom. We had to discuss two things: Causes and Effects and Richard Blaylock's Writing Process Worksheet. I thought that the Cause and Effect was pretty easy to understand. And, Richard Blaylock's writing process worksheet can be a big help when writing our essays. He organized it well and I am comfortable using it.

Have a good weekend, See you all next week!

HAVE A SAFE HALLOWEEN!!

October 31

HAPPY HALLOWEEN!

Today's class is held in our moodle room online. We had to discuss what causes and effects deal with and give some examples. The other assignment we had to do was discuss our thoughts on Richard Blaylock's writing process worksheet and tell whether or not we are comfortable using the process he displayed. I believe that cause and effect are easy to determine apart and use in our writing. I also believe that I can be comfortable using the process that Richard displayed in his writing process worksheet because he explained everything well which helped me understand more how to use it in my writing.

Have a safe weekend everyone! Woohoo! NO CLASS Wednesday....

October 26

Its me again. My blog is late, as I mentioned in my last blog that I have been in the hospital since the 22nd and since I had absolutely NO access to the internet there,I have a lot of catching up to do. Anyway, I believe there was the test #3 that took place on October 26. Some say it was hard and some say it was easy. I sure hope I find it easy when I return to class and make it up. Anyone wanna give me some heads up about that test? Cant wait to return back...Hope everyone did well on their tests and are satisfied with their grades.

October 24

Hi everyone,
I know my blog for October 24th is really late but hopefully I can be excused considering I've been in the hospital since the 22nd. Anyway, according to the calendar, our class on this day was held in the moodle room online and all we did was discuss what the two types of the process analysis were and to discuss our thoughts on Pettit's essay and provide some examples of process analysis that he used in his essay. I think the two types of process analysis are easy to identify.

Test # 3

Test 3 was a little hard for me. It was confusing and long. I think I'm going to fail that test. I swear that I'm going to study as hard as I can for the next one! :)

Moodle (oct.24)

The process analysis is used to tell how to do something or how something is done. There are two types of process analysis. The first one is the directive process analysis, which explains how things are done. This type usually addresses the reader as "you". The second is the informative process analysis. This explains how something was done by giving information. There is also the combination process analysis which occurs when the directive and informative process analysis are blended.

Analysis by division

Analysis by division is approached by a four-step systematic procedure. It is used to explain how something works as a unit. To organize it, you may use an outline. There are two uses of the analysis by division. There is the restaurant review and the career review.

Test # 2

Test number 2 was on chapters 5 and 6. It was easier than test number 1 because I knew what to expect. I did not get the grade that I wanted, but it motivated me to study harder the next time. All in all the test was okay.

Wednesday, October 26, 2011

Test #3

I wasn't really ready for the test. It was way more than what I expected it to be. I really hope that everyone did well. Next time, I have to remember to study the exercises.

Test #3

Test #3 was about Chapters 7 & 8 and had more essays than usual. The essays were actually quite interesting. I struggled with some of the essay questions, it is probably because I was thinking too hard. All in all, I think I did well. Hope you all did too.
Today in EN100, we took Test#3. I honestly have to say I was not ready for that. :/ Well, I tried my best to complete what I could. Hopefully everyone did well on it. I took about an hour to complete it. Well, everyone have a great Halloween weekend. See you all Monday!

Test #3

Today we took our test #3. It was much harder than the first two tests that we took. The format was a little different from the others. I didn't expect there to be some exercises from the book, I was hoping it to be like the other tests. I answered most of the questions, but left some of them blank. I just hope I passed it!

Chapter 7 and 8 Test

Today, we had our Chapter 7 and 8 test and for me it was quite difficult but luckily I manage to answer and remember the facts that I studied. The hardest part of the test for me is the fill in the blanks portion even on the other tests I had a hard time on that. I like doing the extra credit because it might help my grade to go up. We all should always take advantage of that opportunity. Remember that next class meeting will be held online on our Moodle Room.
Have a great weekend. :)

Another Test

This test was actually the hardest test I took so far. I was unprepared for the most part, but I still managed to complete it. There was actually more things to do that required a lot of critical thinking. The "fill in the blanks" got a lot harder too! The only thing I got to finish with ease was the extra credit.

October 26 TEST #3

Today we had our Test #3 which covered chapters 7 and 8. I must say that this test was a bit challenging compared to the first two. It required us to read a passage and we had to answer various questions relating to the passage. However, I do feel like I did well. The extra credit is always helpful so thank you Professor for always including them!

We won't be seeing each other until a week from now. Until then, everyone be good and don't forget to log in to our moodle on the scheduled days!

TEST #4

Today was our Test#4 on Chapters 7 & 8. It felt like a long test. It was a tough one! I had a hard time on a lot. I'm glad that we have that opportunity for extra credit because I'm sure I'm going to need it! I'm not even excited to see my grade. Hope everyone else had a better experience!

Moodle 10/24

We covered topics in chapter 10. I'm surprised to learn about the two types of process analysis. I've always read or used these analyses, but I never knew they had a name. Also, when reading Pettit's poem, it was very descriptive. I could imagine myself following the steps given.

Moodle

Our class on monday was held online in moodle room. We went over chapter 10 which is about Process Analysis: Writing About Doing. There are two types of process analysis, directive and informative. Directive usually tells how to do something or in means of explaining. It addresses the reader in "You". Informative tells you what is happening now or what has just happened. But it doesn't uses "You" often. We also had to read Pettit's essay and give in our thoughts about his writing.

October 19, 2011

Sorry to blog so late. So during class we went over chapter 9. This chapter is basically about analysis by division: examining the parts. There are two uses of analysis by division which is the restaurant review and short story review. Restaurany review describes three elements which are the ambiance, service and food. Short story review is very brief and has several elements and that includes the setting, conflict, characters, plot, theme, and point of view.

Write About Doing

Write About Doing speaks to the writing process analysis. I find that in reading this chapter is actually quite interesting, a bit tricky too. There are two types of process analysis - directive and informative. There was great discussion that surfaced in moodle on-line about the writing analysis in our view and observation regarding 'How to Sharpen a Knife'. And hopefully we could get some clarification during class session.

Monday, October 24, 2011

Wednesday, our class was online in our moodleroom. We had to discuss the two types of process analysis which are directive and informative. Then, we had to discuss what we thought about Pettit's essay. It was pretty easy, but can be tricky! Hope everyone had the chance to get everything done.
Oh yeah! Don't forget to study for our test! Good Luck Everyone! See you!

Moodle Monday

Yesterday we had our online moodle class session. We had two discussions we had to partake in. The first is we had to discuss the two types of process analysis which are directive and informative. Secondly, we had to discuss our thoughts on the process analysis essay by Florence Pettit and give examples that were used.

I hope all of you were able to make it! Be sure to study for our test tomorrow!

Have a great day.
Today at our moodle class session we discussed process analysis and the two different types of process analysis. It was quite interesting to find out that reading a cook book, or directions on a car manual was actually engaging into process analysis. I like finding out things that we never knew before, although we do many different things everyday. It's cool learning what it is, means, or the reason behind it all.
Today was our online session, however, I actually went to the English Building and sat there for twenty minutes waiting for everybody to show. That means that I have to keep my calendar with me at all times so I'll know what's coming up for our next class.

Online Class

Today, our class was held online and we had to read about the Process Analysis About Doing and Process Analysis- Reading for Critical Thinking, Discussion, and Writing Student Paragraph and Essay. We also have to blog about what we have read in our moodle room. Next class meeting were going to have our Test # 3 about Chapter 7 and 8. Good luck to everyone :D

blogg

So, today I actually went to class today again. I forgot to check my online schedule. Next time I know to check the online before class. Tip for everyone, Check your online schedule before waiting for class.

Process Analysis

Reading about the two types of process analysis on Chapter 10 made me pause and actually re think of my answers. This chapter consisted of Directive and Informative process analysis. Directive explains how to do something and Informative is how something is done. I think that the informative process analysis is past and present tense and the directive process analysis is more like a future tense. I think that Florence H. Pettit's essay was a bit confusing but I got some help from my friends to analyze it.

Process Analysis/Student Paragraph and Essay.

Today, Is October/24/2011 I have learned that in Chapter#10 Writing and Doing, Preparation or background, Steps or Sequence,Order. Combination Process Analysis, And sugessted Topics and Prompts for writing Process Analysis This chapter has a whole lot of writing assignments to do. Directive Process Analysis that explains how to do something. Also, In each exercise it has different formats of informative Process Analysis. These writing formats has to do with alot of Cluess,Cops.

Brought the Wrong Book

I actually brought my psychology book in today instead of my EN100 one. I felt so stupid when I realized it. Other then that, we had a guest speaker today that briefed us about what to expect for the up coming extra credit. After that, we read the book and did an exercise that differed with the old and new book. Then towards the end of class, we graded our work. I was glad I didn't have to wait until next week to find out if I passed or not.

October 19

Hi everyone!
As much as I did not like going to school, now that I am out, I actually miss it. I really do not like missing out and having to do the readings on my own at home! Anyway, I read through Chapter 9 which was the Analysis of Division but I'm sure that with some help, I can be able to understand it much more better. Also, from reading everyone's posts, there was a guest speaker that came in today to speak about the extra credit? Can anyone please fill me in with that?! I know I signed up for that event so it would be nice to know all the info and everything.

Have a good weekend everyone! :)

10/19/11

Today I was twenty minutes late for class because I had to do last minute errands and got stuck in traffic. Two other students and I had to step out of class during the test review because we missed it. To be honest, I was not prepared for the test today, so I will be taking it tomorrow at GCC. Any one who missed the test, meet at GCC in room c4.
Jackie came in to talk to us about our extra credit for the Language Arts Conference on November 5. Then we started on Chapter 9: Analysis by Division. We learned the 4 steps in the procedure to guide you in writing an analysis.
Step 1. Begin with something that is a unit(subject).
Step 2. State one principle by which the unit can function.
Step 3. Divide the unit into parts according to that principle.
Step 4. Discuss each of the parts in relation to the unit.

We also corrected our test and I was happy with my grade! Hopefully everyone liked their grade!!

Today in class we went over Chapter 9 fast. This chapter is about analysis by division. I didn't get to hear that much of the lecture and reading on this chapter because I came in late. That means when I get home, I will have to go over it on my own. Hopefully I will be able to make it to class earlier than usual so I can understand the lesson better.
Took our second test on Monday. Again I forgot to study for it and I had to rely on my memory to answer all the questions. Next time I will remember to look at my calendar and study for the other tests that we will be taking during this course

10/19

Today, we finished Chapter 9. It was quite difficult to follow due to the books having different examples. Other than that, we have also encountered what we are to expect from the extra credit assignment. The tests were graded and I'm glad that I passed.

"Analyzing By Dividing"

Hafa Adai,
Today we went over chapter 9 which deals with the Four steps that are: The Procedure, Organization, Sequence of parts, and The two uses of analysis by division.
The Procedure consists of :
1. Begin with something that is a unit.
2. State one principle by which the unit can function.
3. Divide the unit into parts according to the principle.
4. Discuss each of the parts in it's relation to the point.
The Organization is using an outline of an analysis by division.
The Sequence of Parts has 3 sequences:
1.Time
2.Space
3. Emphasis
These are very helpful tips to follow, especially for our test.
Sincerely, Catherine T.Techaira

Analysis by Division

There are four steps to analysis by division - procedure, organization, sequence of parts, and review. We also performed an exercise to analyze the patterns in photo. Short chapter, but very informative.
Today in EN100, we started on Ch.9 Analysis by Division. We learned that there are specific procedures to writing an analysis by division. Step 1, begin with something that is a unit. Step 2, state one principle by which the unit can function. Step 3, divide the unit into parts according to that principle. Step 4, discuss each of the parts in relation to the unit. We practiced exercise 1 and graded test #2. Class was quick.

"Now Testing chapter 5&6"

Hafa Adai,
On Monday we had our 2nd test. I can say that I wasn't confident in getting the best grade. I went over the two chapters about 3 times before class. I hope I did a little better than I thought I did. I remembered most of the definitions and multiple choice. The test seemed harder when, I was taking it.
Sincerely, Catherine T.Techaira

October 19, 2011

Today in class, we learn about writing Analysis by division. There are four steps to follow and will guide you when writing. The first step is to begin with something that is a unit which will be the subject. The next step is to state one principle by which the unit can function. The third step is to divide the unit into parts according to that principle. Lastly is to discuss each of the parts in relation to the unit. I think that remembering all of these can really help you.

10-19-2011

Today we discussed Analysis by Division; which has four steps to its completion. Those four steps are to begin with something that is a unit (subject), state one principle by which the unit can function, divide the unit into parts according to that principle, and discuss each of the parts in relation to the unit. This process helps with with getting into detail about your topic and analyzing each point or supporting points.

Analysis by Division

Today, Is October/19/2011. We have discuss in class Procedures, Organizations, Sequences of Parts. Critical Thinking, Practicing patterns of Analysis by division. Writing On sequence of parts, Time, Space,Emphasis. Also Grading our Test Good Luck to all.

monday.

On Monday class, we took our number two test. The test was really difficult and I'm really nervous to know my grade. It was all about chapter five and six. I hope that everyone did well on the test. Have a good day everyone :)

October 19, 2011 WEDNESDAY

For today's class lesson, we have started Chapter 9 - Analysis by Division. The parts of the analysis by division are procedure, organization and sequence of parts. There are 4 steps to creating a procedure: step 1 begin with a subject, step 2 state a principle, step 3 divide the unit into parts according to the principle, and step 4 discuss each part in relation to the unit. Organize your essay by creating an outline, then organize the units in terms of sequence of parts which are time, and spaceemphasis. After understanding analysis by division, we did Exercise 1 which instructed us to analyze a specific character according to our own knowledge. We are done with Chapter 9! On to Chapter 10.

Analysis by Division

In analysis by division we learned or went over procedure, organization, and sequences of parts. Within the procedures we reviewed it has four steps into writing an analysis by division. Organization is a basic outline of the key points of the essay. Also in sequence of parts you have three basic guides time, space, and emphasis.

October, 19, 2011

Today we had a guest speaker. She spoke about the event that is going to take place on November 5, 2011. Next, we read chapter 9, Analysis by Division. There are two uses of analysis by division. Those are the restaurant review and short story review. After, we graded our test #2. I am surprised with what I got.

wednesday

So, today we had a guest speaker. Her name was Jackie. She seems really nice. She explained the extra credit work. For class, we talked about Analysis by Division. There are 4 steps.

Test#2

We took our second test of the semester and it is pretty good. It was some what similar to our first test, but a different chapter. I hope we did well and we all passed!

TEST

Yesterday, we took our test #2! I was quite nervous about it. I kept reading Chapters 5 & 6 to make sure that I fully understand and remember it. I believe that I did my best, although, I went blank at times. I think it was a little bit easier than the first test. Hopefully everybody gets a good grade though. I can't wait to find out what I got!
Yesterday we took our second test of the semester. I have to admit i was not well prepared. It was pretty difficult for me to recall certain things from chapter 5 and 6. Especially on the 2nd page. I wish whoever missed it good luck. Hopefully everyone got a passing grade.

October 17 :)

So, I can see that I missed the second test! And from reading everyone's posts, some thought it was easier than the first, and some thought it was harder! I hope everyone did well and are satisfied with their results all in all! Unfortunately, I'll have to make it up when I get back to school next month. Oh how I hate missing class and feeling like a lost puppy!

Second Test

I actually found the second test easier then the first! There was a lot of clues within the test that helped jog my memory. Im actually more confident about my grade this time around. I can't wait to see it on our next class session. See you all soon!

Test #2

I believe that today's test was more difficult than the first test. I really couldn't remember some of the answers to some of the questions. I really hope everyone did well though. It just goes to show that I need to study more.

Second Test

Today, we had our Test #2 about Chapter 5 and 6. In my point of view I think that today's test was kinda hard for me to answer all the materials. But I do hope I get a least a passing grade. Our next class will be held in the EC Computer Lab.

TEST #2

Today, October 17, 2011, was our Test #2 and it covered Chapters 5 and 6. I found the test to be fairly simple because I reviewed both chapters very well. We will find out our results on Wednesday and I hope we all have a good score! Don't forget we will be meeting at the computer lab for our next class session. Everyone have a great day!

Chapters 5 & 6

Today was our 2nd test and hopefully I did well. I spaced-out on some parts of the test for some reason, don't really know why. Anyway, hope you all did well also. Test two was quite interesting.

Test #2

So today we took our second test of the semester. It was about chapter 5 and 6. I think that the test wasn't so hard. The question were quite easy to answer. I just hope that I passed.

test number2

So, today we took our 2nd test. I thought it was quite challenging. I know that next time i should study more. I just hope to pass.

Saturday, October 15, 2011

On Wednesday, we had to do 3 things in the moodle room.First was our midterm and final self-reflection. Then we had to read chapter 8 and discuss the importance of exemplification. Writing using exaples is interesting. By using many examples in your writing, a reader gets to really understand your topic.

"Paragraphs, Essays, and Reports"

Hafa Adai,
I read over the book and acually understood what I read. I think that Discussion and Critical thinking allow you use the Writing Process to help improve the final descriptive paragraph. In order to have a complete narrative you need to include the situation , outcome, and the meaning. There are appropriate techniques like images that appeal to the senses, dialogue, and transitional devices. Remember to give details concerning action. Be consistent with the point of view. Make sure that narratives have an expository purpose that explains specific ideas. Don't forget the incident report.
Sincerely, Catherine T. Techaira
Today is our class is held in moodle room. We had several things to do today. We had to read Chapter 8-Exemplification: Writing with Examples. Exemplification means using examples to explain, convince, or amuse. I learned that it is important when writing your essays to keep the reader interested. It is also one of the most common and effective way of developing ideas. We also had to respond about Yegavin's paragraph. And lastly, upload our mid-term reflection paper.
I hope everybody was able to get everything done!

Exemplification!

Today on our online class, we were instructed to discuss the importance of exemplification. I found the topic very useful. The second requirement was to discuss exemplification used in Yegavian's essay. The essay was not interesting but it really clarified his intended topic descriptively. I found the essay a bit bias regarding imagery towards different ethnic cultures who might not be familiarly with his descriptions, such as the Turkish coffee. If someone who never tasted Turkish coffee before was told to imagine its taste, that person might find it hard to relate. Overall, it was a well written essay.

Online Class

Today, our class was held on our moddle room. We also have to post or upload our Midterm Reflection Paper before this day ends. I thought I won't be able to do it because I was absent Monday and I didn't know the format or the criteria for it. Fortunately, all the things that I was looking for are posted on the right side of our class blog. So, I was really thankful for that. :)
Have a great Weekend :)

10/12

Today, the midterm self-reflection was due. Luckily, I was able to complete it after working on it for quite some time. Also, today was our moodle room session. It was quite difficult since I wasn't able to really capture the idea of exemplification clearly.

Remember

I finally remembered to blog on our online session today. Having an online session for any class is hard because you don't need to attend any class, all you need to do is log in, type, and log off. By the way, don't forget to write your mid term self-reflection paper. Post it on Moodle before 11:55pm. Enjoy your weekend and don't party hardy too much.

It's Wednesday!

Hey guys! Hope you guys having a fun afternoon! We kind of got a lot on our plate unless all was done before the due date. Other than that, we just had our second essay done and we are pretty much half way to the semester! I hope next class meeting we all get a good understanding of exemplification. Did anyone have a little confusion? I had a bit, but after we all go through it together it would not be so bad. Enjoy your weekend!

Moodle Wednesday

Today is once again our online moodle session. There are two discussions that must be done today. We have to discuss the importance of exemplification, and give examples using this form of writing and we also have to discuss our thoughts on Yegavian's essay as well as the exemplification that was used in his essay. Don't forget our Midterm Self-Reflection is also due today. See you in moodle and have a great week!

WEDNESDAY...

Today we had an online class. We had to discuss about exemplification and its importance. We also had to discuss what we think about Yegavian's story and discuss about the exemplification inside the story. Exemplification are very useful and it helps the writer to give more examples. Giving more examples can make a reader have interest in the essay and the reader will understand what the essay is mainly about. Yegavian's essay is a good essay example with good exemplification that makes the reader know what the essay will basically talk about.

Exemplification

OCTOBER 12, 2011
Class is held online in our EN100 moodle room. All we had to do was start reading chapter 8 which was about exemplification and examples of it. I learned that exemplification is one of the most common and effective ways to develop ideas about a topic and some examples can be in sentences, phrases, or even in single words. Then on the second assignment, we had to read Yegavian's essay on Southern California and we had to discuss our thoughts about it along with the exemplification that he used in his writing.

By reading what exemplification is, I partly understand what it is, but after reading Yegavian's essay, I kind if had a hard time identifying the examples he used in his essay. I think we should recap this section as a class next time so that I can better understand it AND because I don't want to feel lost with this part while everyone else gets is.

OH! Our mid-term self reflection papers are also due! Dont forget to upload those to our moodle room also. Remember that the criteria for it is given on the right hand side of our class blog.

10-10-11

I wish I could've made it to class today, but I had an appointment. I dislike missing classes because I feel as if I'm way behind and will be so lost on the next class. Although, I was able to go over the rest of Chapter 7. I have read "Yearning for Love" and "The Drag". I also went over exercise 11 and 12. The Writing Process Worksheet helped Mike a lot while writing his essay. It is a great tool for everybody to use when writing an essay.

10/10

Today, I was absent from class. I'm feeling a little bit under the weather. I know we were supposed to go over writing paragraphs and essays, but I wasn't able to make it to class unfortunately. My flu has taken a turn for the worse. I also read that we have a mid-term reflection due on Wednesday. Can someone please inform me about what the objective and guidelines of the reflection are? I hope to get better as soon as possible.

Sunday, October 9, 2011

The Writing Process Worksheet is a very useful tool in writing. All we need to do is follow the three stages of the writing process. First, we brainstorm, freewrite, and cluster. Next, we organize using outlining. In the last stage, we write and revise the essay. Then write the final draft! :)

10/10/11

Today, I finally took the test I missed. Soon everyone will get their test back. The test was fairly easy with the help of studying. I did not get to do the two exercises everyone else did. I'll be sure to catch up when I get home.
Today in EN100, we finally finished Ch.7, Descriptive Narration: Moving through space and time. First, we read several examples of descriptive and narrative essays followed by discussion and critical thinking exercises. Hopefully we remember to use the descriptive narration writer's guidelines while completing our mid-term essays. The guidelines and today's lesson will be useful.

Monday!

Today we went over two stories which is the Yearning for Love and The Drag. After reading the essays, we had to answer some questions. We also read Rituals as Comfort for the Soul and discussed about it and how MLA was used in this story. We also discussed about the five parts of narration and how we can use it.
Today we did a recap on chapter 7. We read Chantra Shastri's essay "Yearning for Love." Her essay was about her not wanting to go through a arranged marriage, but she has no choice but to go through it because it's part of her culture's tradition. Then we read about Mike's essay "The Drag." His essay was about his experience in drag racing and reaching up to 230 m.p.h. Reading those two essays shows us how they annotated it and how to understand it better.

Yearning for Love / The Drag

Today's class we performed two exercises: Yearning for Love and The Drag. The first story was about an arranged marriage that the daughter did not agree with now being in America; however, as a traditional family, she has no choice. The second story talked about a race car driver with experience bustling through the tracks. In both stories, we learned how to identify the descriptive and narration.

Yuck, MONDAY

I strongly dislike Mondays, Oh well that's juts me. Today in class we went through chapter 7 and the different types of descriptive paragraphs. When writing an essay it is important to be descriptive so the reader can relate to the situation and have a vivid image of what the paragraph is about. Another thing we covered in class is the two types essay formats which is the MLA and APA.

blogging

Today's class was really relaxed. I didn't really stress out about it much. We did some exercises about essays. One thing that got to me was the prearranged marriage. That really gets me thinking. I learned that MLA means modern language association.

October 10

It's MONDAY again!
We began class with finishing off where we left off last class, chapter 7, which was the student paragraph, essay, and report. We then completed exercise 11 and 12 which were to read the essays given then answer discussion and critical thinking questions that were in relates to them. I thought that those exercises were very easy to do. We also reviewed the WRITER'S GUIDELINES on Descriptive Narration to help with our next test and that was basically all we did today. Cheers to an easy, smooth Monday...

Dont forget that our next class session is online AND we must all turn in our mid-term self reflection papers as well. Have a good rest of the week...

Back in Class

Today I went to class feeling better. I got my grade for our first test and I felt that I could of done more to improve my score. We started class with a sad essay of a girl who's going through an arranged marriage that could not be avoided. After that, we completed an exercise that was really easy and moved on to another essay that was about drag racing. The exercise for that essay was a bit harder but I still completed it before the time limit. Todays meeting had a lot of essays that we needed to review. I learned how to better comprehend essays and practiced my critical thinking skills.

MONDAY :P

Oh Monday, don't you just love it!!! Today's class wasn't so bad being that its a Monday. The best example of a discriptive essay was 'Yearning for Love'. It was a good concept and a sad story. Also, the Critical Thinking Exercises were really helpful because it made me understand the main idea of the passage and other points that I missed when we first read it as a class. Enjoy the rest of your week & weekend everbody. I'm going back home for the weekend so I know I will. See you on Moodle.

October 10, 2011 MONDAY

In the beginning of class, Professor Rivera showed me the result of my test grade and I am happy to know that I received an A. I'll be working hard here on after to continue to keep my grades up. For today's lesson, we have read Yearning for Love by Chantra Shastri and we also did Exercise 11. This exercise made us further understand the situation of a story. Afterwards, we have gone over a descriptive paragraph narration, The Drag by Mike Kavanagh. This helped us understand the description and narrative much better. Afterwards, we had to analyze Rituals as Comfort Food for the Soul by Adam Rensky to understand more about MLA formatting.
Today was a great session! Don't forget to do your Midterm Self-Reflection and turn it in tomorrow. See you all next week.

October 10, 2011

Today we started off the day by reading a paragraph called "Yearning for Love." After we did an exercise about it. It was really quite easy. The second exercise was similar to the first one. Although it is similar, I think it was easier than the first. Last, we went over the writer's guidelines on descriptive narration. The guidelines help us with our descriptive narrative essays.

Continuation

Basically this afternoon we continued chapter seven, descriptive and narration. We went over few exercises that dealt with critical thinking and discussion. The last part of the chapter allows you to understand the written passage that is given and lets the reader better understand the meaning of the passage.

Last Week Wednesday

I know, i'm so late on blogging! Well anyways, last time we met, we went over Chapter 7: Description Narration- Moving Through Space and Time. We went over so many things; a lot of reading. The five narrative patterns are Situation, Conflict, Struggle, Outcome, and Meaning. The techniques of descriptive writing are dominant impression, word choice, point of view and order. We also went over the two descriptions, which is Objective description that shows fact and no feelings and Subjective that shows opinions and feelings. Then we did some exercises to help us better understand what we went over. Oh yeah, I even saw my test score after class and I was happy with my score!

Descriptive Narration

The purpose of a narrative descriptive essay is to tell a story vividly to appeal to the reader’s senses. The more sensory images, or description, that is used to tell a story, the more interesting it will be to readers. Narrative descriptive essays are commonly assigned in first-year college writing classes, and writing one involves many steps.

Thursday, October 6, 2011

At our last meeting in EN100, we went through Ch. 7, Description Narration: Moving through space and time. We learned that a narrative is an account of an incident or a series of incidents that make up a complete and significant action. Each narrative has 5 parts: Situation, the background for the action, Conflict, a problem in the surroundings, Struggle, manner of dealing with the subject, Outcome, the result of the struggle, and Meaning, the significance of the story. There are four specific tasks: Emphasize a single point, choose your words with care, establish a perspective from which to describe your subject, and position the details for order. In class we did exercises one and two. I found them kind of difficult only because i did not really understand the outline.

Family Emergency

I wasn't able attend class do to a family emergency, which required me to supervise my two younger brothers. I also had no access to a computer while at my grandmothers house, preventing me from blogging until the next morning. I did manage to go over chapter 7 Descriptive Narrative. This chapter talkes about situation, conflict, struggle, outcome, and meaning. I also went over the two different types of descriptions, objective and subjective. Objective descriptions are based on facts and subjective descriptions revolve around opinions. I haven't gotten to complete the following exercises yet but I will after blogging. I apologize again for not attending class and I hope to see you all on our next class meeting.

Appointment

Today I had an appointment so I wasn't able to make it to today's class session. However on my own time I did go over Chapter 7: Descriptive Narration. In any pattern of writing, there is a form of narration and a description that comes along with it. There are 5 narrative patterns which are Situation, Conflict, Struggle, Outcome and Meaning. Situation is what the narrative is about. Conflict may be a problem that occurs in the surroundings, with another person or within the individual themselves. This problem creates struggle. The struggle adds action or engagement which creates the plot of the narrative. The outcome is the result of the struggle. Finally, meaning is the message and significance of the story.
Point of View shows the writer's relationship to the material and the subject and may be viewed through first person or third person perspective.
The types of Descriptive Patterns are: objective description (clearly presents the subject with clarity) and subjective description, also known as emotional description, (conveys a feeling about the subject and makes a point).

See you all on our next class session! Enjoy your weekend.

10/5/2011

Today we read and discussed chapter 7. The five narrative patterns are situation, conflict, struggle, outcome and meaning. The two types of description are objective description, which is facts; no feelings and subjective description, which is opinion and emotion. The first exercise was to identify the situation, conflict, struggle and outcome and meaning on the topic "A random, Unexpected, and Welcome Act of Kindness". The second exercise was to complete an outline on a cheating student. These exercises we're tough, but now I have a clearer understanding of what we learned today.

Descriptive Narration

In class we learned that there are 2 types of description. There is the objective, which is based on facts and the subjective, which is more on the emotions. There are also the four techniques of descriptive writing.  They are the Dominant Impression, Word choice, Point of view and Order. All of these are very important when writing a descriptive narration.

Descriptive Narration

Today's class we covered descriptive narration. The narritive is defined as an acount of an incident or a series of incidents that make up a complete and significant action. There are five parts: situation, conflict, struggle, outcome, and meaning. We also did an exercise addressing these five parts. The other exercise on "Cheating Student" I kind of struggled with because was not sure whether to snitch or not. I think it depends on the situation and the implications upon oneself if decided to do so.

Descriptive Narration

Today, our class went over Chapter 7. The chapter was pretty interesting and contained vivid imagery. The exercise for today was also quite amusing as we practiced narrative patterns. It was a little hard for me to do the exercise, but I was able to complete it in time.

Almost FRIDAY :)

Descriptive Writing was our lesson for the class. It was a great subject because I love writing descriptive essays. When I describe something especially a situation I tend to go on and on and on with details about what is happening. I do this so my readers would fully understand the situation. To write a discriptive piece one must practice dominant impression, careful word choice, express a point of view and order. When you have all these four techniques in check, you find your self not only telling a story but making your reader and audience feel like they too are a character in your story.
